By descent in the artist's family to his great-granddaughter, Virginia Cummings Devine [1919-2004, Mrs. John E. Devine], Washington;[1] gift 7 December 2000 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2016 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] The painting is one of three known to have been painted by Brown for each of his three daughters. Mrs. Devine's father was the artist's grandson.
