Sally Mann

Artist, American, born 1951

Hills roll gently back to a mountain range under a low sky dense with dark clouds in this horizontal black and white photograph. The grassy field closest to us leads back to a few dark cows grazing in a dip in the near distance. Lines and groves of lacy, spindly trees are farther back, surrounding a few structures and houses. Lines of darker trees creating a shallow V across the center of the composition are separated by a gap not far from the buildings. Strips of mountains are layered like torn, cut paper along the horizon, which comes halfway up this composition. Dark clouds roiling in the sky above are alleviated by a band of brighter sky along the mountaintops.
