Provenance

James Clark McGuire [1867-1930], New York;[1] gift 1929 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] It is possible McGuire inherited the sculpture from his grandfather, also James Clark McGuire (1812-1888), who was originally a bookbinder, and later a major art collector, in Washington, and one of the original trustees of the Corcoran Gallery of Art. The younger McGuire's uncle, Frederick B. McGuire (1837-1915), was also a collector, and an estate sale of his Barye and Mene bronzes was held at the American Art Association in New York on 26 February 1917.
