Provenance

Mr. Field, Scheveningen, Holland; purchased 1905 through Dr. Abraham Bredius [1855-1946], Amsterdam, by William Andrews Clark [1839-1925], New York;[1] bequest 1926 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2014 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] The provenance information for the "Faience: Delft" is recorded in NGA curatorial files in this way: "Purchased by Senator Clark from Mr. Field Scheveninges, Holland, 1905. Through Dr. A. Bredius." An extensive report on the Corcoran Deltware, maiolica, and "Palissy-ware," prepared in 2009 by Robin J.C. Hildyard and Jennifer Hawkins Opie (in NGA curatorial files), interpreted the statement to mean that William A. Clark "purchased the entire assemblage in 1905 from a Mr. Field, perhaps a friend or agent resident at Scheveningen in Holland, 'through Dr. A. Bredius' who was presumably the advisor and middle-man with links to the Dutch antique trade. [Bredius was a well-known art historian, collector, and museum curator and director.] Many of the objects still carry labels for one particular dealer at Scheveningen, H. Fuld..." It is possible that "Mr. Field" and "H. Fuld" were the same; the printed labels read "H. Fuld" at the top, "Scheveningue" at the bottom, "Garanti Ancien" in the center, and above this last in the center, a handwritten number.
