Provenance

The artist, until at least 1828.[1] Thomas Dwight, Boston, at least between 1839 and 1850.[2] (Victor Spark, New York); purchased 1949 by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2014 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] The painting was lent by the artist to Second Exhibition of Paintings in the Athenaeum Gallery, Boston, 1828, no. 171.
[2] The painting was lent by Dwight in 1839 to the Exhibition of Pictures Painted by Washington Allston at Harding's Gallery, Boston (no. 29), and in 1850 to the Twenty-third Exhibition of Paintings in the Boston Athenaeum, no. 94. The label on the painting's stretcher for Tercentenary Retrospective Exhibition, 1936, lists the return address as Doll & Richards, 138 Newbury Street. However, no other information about this dealer as a possible owner is known.
