Artwork history & notes
Provenance
The artist; gift 4 December 1979 from Harry and Ruth Guffee, West Haven, Connecticut, through (Max Protetch Gallery, New York) to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington;[1] acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] Max Protetch notified the Corcoran that the Guffees were the donors of the painting (letter, 21 December 1979, to Peter Marzio, the Corcoran's director, in NGA curatorial files). However, it is unclear whether the Guffees had actually owned the painting, or had simply purchased it for the Corcoran.
