The image depicts a man from the waist up. He is sitting upright and facing forward with a serious expression. The man has prominent cheekbones, deep-set eyes, and a stern mouth. His dark hair is slicked back. He wears formal clothing - a dark coat, a white shirt with a high stiff collar, and a dark cravat. There is no visible jewelry or objects in his hands. The background is plain, with an oval border around the portrait. The entire image has a sepia tone. The inscription at the bottom identifies him as Hon. John Bell and notes his candidacy for the presidency in 1860.
