The image shows three figures seated around a wooden table set indoors. The person on the left is a woman with short, blonde hair, wearing a long, beige robe. In the middle, there is another person with short dark hair, wearing a blue dress. To the right, a shirtless young man with curly brown hair is visible, sitting next to an open book on the table. An earthen vase with green leaves and orange flowers sits on the table. Through an archway in the background, there is a view of a calm blue sea with rocky formations and part of a lush green landscape on the right.

Provenance

The artist; purchased October 1928 through (Frank K.M. Rehn Gallery, New York)[1] by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] According to a Corcoran accession document, in NGA curatorial files, the painting was in the possession of "F.K.M. Rehn" when purchased, but the painting was likely still on consignment from the artist. In April 1927 Karfiol consigned three paintings to Rehn, one of which was titled "Three Figures;" see Frank K.M. Rehn Galleries Records, 1858-1969, Terra Foundation Center for Digital Collections, Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.
