Artwork history & notes
Provenance
(Perls Galleries, New York);[1] possibly Anita [d. 2015] and Arthur [d. 1999] Kahn, New York.[2] Richard and Elaine Kaufman, Boston, after 1982; gift 2017 to NGA.
[1] The sculpture was Perls inventory number 12946, and was included in exhibitions of the dealer's acquisitions that were on view in early 1981 and late 1982. See the checklists for the exhibitions in Perls Galleries Records, 1937-1997, Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington (copies in NGA curatorial files).
[2] A receipt dated 16 December 1982, apparently indicating that the sculpture went to Anita Kahn but was returned, is in the Perls Galleries Records (see note 1), copy in NGA curatorial files. The Kahns were major Calder collectors.
