The sitter, Andrew W. Mellon [1855-1937], Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.;[1] gift to his attorney, Donald D. Shepard [1893-1966], Washington, D.C.; by inheritance to his twin daughters, Mary Shepard [d. 2018] and Josephine Shepard; gift 2019 to NGA.
[1] The portrait was likely painted in London after Mellon's arrival in April 1932 as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain.
