Midnight Truth

2017

Yoshitomo Nara

Painter, Japanese, born 1959

The stylized face of a light-skinned person with gold-colored eyes looks out at us against a chestnut-brown background in this vertical painting. The person’s honey-brown bangs are short on the high forehead, and hair falls to the shoulders. The person’s face is wide with notably wide-set eyes and cursory dots and a straight line for the nose and mouth. The chin is also wide. The shirt is painted as a block of rose pink. The work is painted with blended strokes giving it a soft look.
