The image depicts a man seated from the waist up, with his body slightly turned to the side but facing the camera. The man has deep-set eyes, a prominent nose, and a firm mouth. He has curly dark hair with some thinning at the front. He is dressed in a dark suit, including a waistcoat and bow tie, over a white shirt. A pocket watch chain is visible hanging from his waistcoat. The bottom of the photograph is inscribed with "Barnum." The background is plain.
