The image shows an older man sitting by an open window. He is holding a book or newspaper and has a thoughtful expression on his face. The man has a full beard and mustache, wavy hair, and is wearing a jacket over a vest with a collared shirt and necktie or cravat. The background includes a lightly wooded area outside the window with trees and bushes along a path that leads into the distance. An inscription in Italian, "a mon ami Valentin," is also included alongside the artist's name.
