Woman Sewing, Man Painting

1900

Jean Bernard

Artist, Swiss, 1897 - 1937

A man sits painting at an easel set up under a tree and a woman sits nearby, her back to the trunk, sewing a white cloth in this horizontal black and white photograph. The tree reaches off the top edge of the composition to our right of center. The two people sit on the left half, angled in that direction so we see them almost in profile. The man wears a floppy cap and dark suit. He holds an oval paint palette in one hand and lifts a paintbrush to the painting with the other. The woman’s dark hair is gathered atop her head, and she looks down at her work. She wears a long-sleeved, ankle-length dress with a high collar. Bushes and mountains are hazy in the distance.
