Rock of Ages #15, Active Section, E.L. Smith Quarry, Barre, Vermont

1992

Edward Burtynsky

Artist, Canadian, born 1955

We look down into a straight-sided quarry at mining equipment that appears minuscule in scale in this nearly square color photograph. The walls are streaked with pale and dark gray, and snow rests on narrow ledges between the quarried levels and on the ground. At first glance we might think we’re looking down the sides of skyscrapers onto a city block.
