Artwork history & notes

Provenance

(Gustave Tempelaere [1840-1904], Paris).[1] Romain. Adolphe Tavernier [1853-1945], Paris. (Théodore Bonjean [1861-1913], Paris).[2] Coudray, Paris.[3] (F. & J. Tempelaere, Paris).[4] Albert Dubosc [1874-1956], Sainte-Adresse by 1936.[5] (Alfred Daber, Paris). (Arthur Tooth & Sons Ltd, London). Private collection, Switzerland. (Sale, Sotheby’s New York, 27 June 2001, lot 113); Miriam [1937–2024] and Eliezer H. Benbassat [1934–2022], Washington, DC; The Miriam Benbassat Trust; gift 2025 to NGA.
[1] The provenance is derived from the Sotheby’s sale catalogue from 27 June 2001. Tempeleare was a gallerist who represented Fantin-Latour.
[2] Bonjean specialized in modern French and old masters. His stepson Etienne Bignou inherited the gallery and eventually renamed it Galerie Bignou, but continued selling Bonjean’s stock for some years before moving onto more contemporary art.
[3] This was possibly a member of the Coudray perfume manufacturing family. Edmond Auguste Coudray [1845-1908] was a client of Theo van Gogh and had a modest collection of mostly modern French art. The catalogue of a 1908 sale of the collection of Monsieur E. Coudray at the Hôtel Drouot includes a Fantin still life with pomegranates and raisins spilling out from a basket, but no lot that matches this painting.
[4] After their father’s death, Ferdinand and Julien Tempelaere took over his gallery.
[5] According to the catalogue of the 1936 Grenoble exhibition Centenaire de Henri Fantin-Latour, which was organized by Julien & Ferdinand Tempelaere.
