Artwork history & notes
Provenance
Fray Pedro Canto, circa 1639-1655.[1] Private collection, Madrid; (Caylus, Madrid); purchased 2026 by NGA.
[1] An inscription on the back of the cross, DEF.PEDROCANTOVICARIODECORO, indicates that it belonged to Fray Pedro Canto. This may have been Pedro del Canto, a friar with the hospitaller Order of St John of God who is documented at a convent and hospital in Jaén in 1728 (Hospital de San Juan de Dios) and a convent and hospital in Cádiz in 1732 (Hospital de la Misericordia), both cities in Andalusia. See memo of 14 August 2026 from Carlos Maura, NGA curatorial files.
