Mme. XXX en Flore

François Voyez

Artist, French, 1746 - 1805

Printed with fine black lines and hatching on cream-colored paper, a smooth-skinned woman holding a flower garland is shown from the knees up in this vertical engraved portrait. She sits with her body facing us, and she tips her head to our left as she looks at us with large, wide-set eyes. She has dark, curving brows, a straight nose with a rounded tip, and her bow-shaped lips are closed in a slight smile. Her light-colored hair is swept back from her forehead and curls along her ears. The scoop neck of her dress is cut low and lined with a ruffle. Translucent cuffs peek out of voluminous, elbow-length sleeves, which are tied around the upper arms. A strand of pearls acts as a belt over a flaring skirt, which gathers in deep folds around the woman’s lap. The garland is made of roses, tulips, and other flowers. She holds up one end with her right hand, to our left. It drapes across her lap, and she holds the other end with her other hand. A gnarled tree grows up the right edge of the composition and more twist into the sky in the distance behind the woman. The portrait is engraved to look like it is framed, and the frame casts shadows along the inner edges and corners. Text below the frame reads, “MADAM DE EN FLORE. Se vend à Paris, chez Basan.” Smaller text under the left corner of the frame reads, “Nattier Pinxit” and text under the right corner reads, “Voyez le Jeune Sculp.”
