Artist, British, 1740 - after 1814

The image shows a nature scene with a sloping terrain among trees. There is no visible horizon line, with the view mainly composed of the rising slope and trees. The trees are depicted with diagonal brushstrokes, giving a textured appearance to their bark and foliage. The color palette is monochromatic, in shades of black and white. A cloaked figure is seen sitting by a tree trunk, partially in shadow. The landscape extends upwards with dense trees and foliage, leading the eye through the canopies.
