Käthe Kollwitz

Artist, German, 1867 - 1945

Drawn loosely with black charcoal on tan paper, this vertical sheet shows a tightly packed group of hollow-eyed, emaciated adults and children. Four men, a woman, and at least five children fill the top two-thirds of the paper, their heads nearly brushing the top edge. They all stand facing us, their mouths downturned. Dark lines and smudges suggest gaunt faces and deep-set eyes. One man on the far left has a bandage over his eyes. The men wear loose shirts, and two wear caps. The men flank a woman who stands before them in the center, looking out with shadowed eyes. She wears a dark robe with the hood pulled up. Her long arms and oversized hands are wrapped around three children gathered in front of her while two others huddle on either side. One wide-eyed child with mouth agape stands to our left, holding the forearm of the man there with both hands. The woman’s torso fades into broad, vertical charcoal strokes below the waist and a lopsided, thin border encloses the scene. The artist signed the lower right, “Kathe Kollwitz.”
