The image shows a high angle view of a busy urban street. The street is narrow with tall buildings on both sides, leading into the distance where more buildings can be seen. The architecture appears detailed and historic. The scene is in monochrome with shades of black, white, and gray. People are seen walking on the sidewalk, and horse-drawn carriages and early cars are on the street. The disappearing street creates a sense of depth and a bustling atmosphere.

The image shows a man leaning his head on his hand, positioned with his face resting on his left hand. He has a mustache, thin-framed eyeglasses, and thick, greying hair that curls slightly at the edges. He is dressed in a formal jacket, a white shirt, and a black bow tie. The background is a soft, dark blur.

Remarks

This view made near the Jardin des Tuileries looks west down rue Saint Honoré. The Church of Saint-Roch is visible at right.

This photograph and Key Set numbers 362 and 364 appear related and were probably made during Stieglitz’s honeymoon in Europe in 1894.
