“Just before your letter came telling me about your having called him [Dove] up I had taken out the proof of the negatives I had made of him. One is all right for use. But one profile is terrible—may have nothing to do with Dove but expresses much personally. As soon as I begin printing—my feet still keep me from starting—Dove will come first. I want to see how he’ll look properly printed” (Stieglitz to Paul Rosenfeld, 17 July 1923, YCAL).
