Portrait of a Young Man in Red

c. 1480

Giovanni Bellini

Artist, Venetian, c. 1430/1435 - 1516

Shown from the chest up, a clean-shaven young man with pale, peachy skin looks off to our left against a cloudy sky in this vertical portrait painting. His body is angled to our left, and he gazes in that direction with dark eyes under thick, arched brows. He has a long nose, smooth cheeks, and a hint of a five-o-clock shadow around his closed, peach-colored lips. Chestnut-brown hair is covered by a black headdress with two long tails. One end drapes over the front of his right shoulder, farther from us, and the other end hangs down his back. He wears a brick-red garment that falls in vertical pleats from a high collar. A white undergarment peeks out from the top of the neckline, and the collar is fastened with a small clasp at the throat. Behind him, tan-colored clouds float across a blue sky.

Artwork history & notes

Provenance

Possibly Andrea Vendramin, Venice, by 1627.[1] Count Manfred von Ingenheim [b. 1896], Ober-Rengersdorf, Germany; (Duveen Brothers, Inc., London and New York); purchased February 1930 by Andrew W. Mellon, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.; deeded 28 December 1934 to The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust, Pittsburgh;[2] gift 1937 to NGA.
[1] Tancred Borenius, "More about the Andrea Vendramin Collection," Burlington Magazine 9, no. 348 (March 1932): 145, pl. 2A, first suggested that the NGA portrait may be identified with a picture attributed to Bellini in the illustrated inventory of the paintings in the collection of Andrea Vendramin compiled in 1627 (see Tancred Borenius, The Picture Gallery of Andrea Vendramin, London, 1923: pl. 10).
[2] Mellon purchase date and date deeded to Mellon Trust are according to Mellon collection files in NGA curatorial records and David Finley's notebook (donated to the National Gallery of Art in 1977, now in the Gallery Archives).
