Artist, German, 1472 - 1553

The image shows several figures in a somber setting. One central figure lies on the ground, surrounded by others who appear to be attending or mourning him. The central figure is muscular, mostly unclothed, with visible ribs and defined limbs. The surrounding people are positioned closely around him, bending or kneeling, some with their heads covered in shawls or veils. Their facial expressions are serious, and their attire is elaborate, including robes and patterned garments. One person wears a crown. Jewelry is minimal, and the background features a hilly landscape with distant town, a tree, and clouds in a clear sky above. Two heraldic shields are shown in the upper left corner.
