The image is an engraving showing a man from the waist up. The man faces slightly to his left, with his body turned towards the viewer but his face in a three-quarter profile. He has distinct facial features, a mustache, and short, neatly combed hair. He wears a large brimmed hat with a band, a high ruffled collar, and a textured coat with decorative details. He holds a rolled paper in his right hand and his left hand is partly tucked into his coat. There is an insignia with a coat of arms in the upper left corner. The background consists of parallel horizontal lines. Below the portrait is a Latin inscription that reads "Nemo Repente Sapit, Merae AE 52 Anno 1579," accompanied by the initials "IH W."
