The image shows the upper half of a man's body. The man is facing slightly to the left, with his head turned toward the viewer. He has a short, neatly trimmed beard and mustache and is wearing a large, wide-brimmed hat. He is dressed in a detailed garment with fur trim and is holding a staff in his right hand. The background is plain, with handwritten text above and below the portrait identifying him as "Nicolaus Baconus" and including the words "Mediocria firma."
