Artist, Dutch, 1558 - 1617

The image displays an upper body portrait of a man turned slightly to the left, with a stern expression, a beard and mustache. He has short, dark, wavy hair and wears a detailed ruff around his neck, a decorated doublet with buttons, and a cloak over his shoulders. The man's left hand holds a brush-like object. In the background is a coat of arms with a shield, heraldic symbols, a helmet with a plume, all against a patterned backdrop. The image is framed by a border with inscribed text along the upper and lower edges.
