The image shows a portrait of a man from the waist up. He is facing slightly to the left, looking directly at the viewer. The man has a pointed beard, mustache, and graying hair combed back. He wears an elaborate costume with a lace ruff collar, patterned sleeves, and a striped outer garment. In his right hand, he holds a quill pen, with an open book on the table in front of him. Various instruments are on the table. The background has an ornate frame with Latin inscription and decorative elements. The engraving is monochromatic with fine lines and shading for texture and depth.
