The image shows three people in a dimly lit interior setting. The primary figure is a woman seated in the center of the composition. Her body is shown from head to knee, sitting upright, with her head slightly bowed and turned to the left. She wears a long, flowing dress with ample fabric that folds and gathers around her. Next to her, on her right, is a man standing and bending slightly towards her. To the woman's left is another man, crouching and holding a bowl and a spoon. The scene is set in a rustic room or attic, with visible beams and a dark background. The table in front of them is covered with a cloth and holds a jar and a piece of bread.

Artwork history & notes

Provenance

Baron Adalbert von Lanna [1836-1909], Prague, Bohemia (Lugt 2773); Rudolf Gutmann [1880-1966], Vienna (Lugt 2770) [1]; (sale, C.G. Boerner, Leipzig, May 7-9, 1928, no. 127); purchased by Lessing J. Rosenwald [1891-1979], Jenkintown, PA (Lugt 1760b); gift to NGA, 1943.
[1] Although Rudolph Gutmann’s collection was seized in 1938 and restituted to him almost in its entirety, this particular work does not seem to appear in the catalogue of the seized collection or among the seizure cards created for the Zentraldepot, Vienna. This print entered the market before 1938.
