Adolfo Bellocq

Artist, Argentinean, 1899-1972

Printed with bold black lines against tan-colored paper, eight men and a dog walk in a loose line from left to right in this long, horizontal woodcut. The men carry baskets, bundles, sacks, a shovel, and a rope. Most wear sleeveless shirts and long or short pants. Four are barefoot, and four wear boots or their feet are wrapped in cloth. Closely spaced, the mostly curved lines of the men's clothing, muscled arms, drawn faces, and hatching across the background create a dense pattern over the entire surface. An inscription in pen is written in cursive across the bottom margin: "Al senior Lessing J. Rosenwald sinceramente Adolfo Bellocq 1927."
