Provenance
(Seth Morton Vose [1831-1910], Providence);[1] sold to Mrs. David P. Kimball [d. 1920], Boston; taken in trade 21 February 1905 by (Robert C. Vose, Boston);[2] (sale, American Art Association, New York, 4-5 April 1917, no. 103); purchased by (Otto Bernet).[3] Josef Stransky [1875-1936], New York;[4] sold to Mr. Meyer, New Jersey; repurchased by Josef Stransky, by whom sold 14 September 1928 to Chester Dale [1883-1962], New York; bequest 1963 to NGA.
[1] Robert C. Vose, son of Seth Morton Vose, letter, dated 6 December 1903, in NGA curatorial files.
[2] Photocopies of ledgers from the Vose Galleries, in NGA curatorial files.
[3] Knoedler library annotated copy of the American Art Association sale catalogue, and press reports.
[4] Chester Dale papers in the NGA curatorial files indicate that Stransky purchased the painting at the American Art Association sale, sold it to Mr. Meyer, repurchased it, and sold it to Dale. Stransky was "associated" with the art firm of Wildenstein & Co., in New York, but according to Ay-Whang Hsia, Vice President of Wildenstein's, the firm never owned this painting and Stransky must have been acting on his own.
