Provenance
(Piero Tozzi [1882-1974], New York); sold February 1963 to William B. Jaffe [1904-1972], New York;[1] gift 1974 to NGA.[2]
[1] Correspondence and bill of sale from The Tozzi Archive, The Onassis Library for Hellenic and Roman Art, Department of Greek and Roman Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (copies, NGA curatorial files). Payment for the sculpture was completed in December 1964.
[2] Jaffe left the sculpture to the Gallery in his will, with life interest to his widow, Evelyn Annenberg Friede Jaffe (1911-2005, later Mrs. Melville Hall). She released her life interest in 1974.
