This painting shows a person in dark clothing crouching or sitting next to a large rock on the right while looking through a telescope mounted on a tripod. Their back is to us, and the telescope is pointed towards the top left corner of the painting. They are wearing a dark green shirt and a wide-brimmed brown hat that covers almost all of their head and neck, with only a small amount of peach-colored skin visible. The background features a grassy hill with dark green vegetation on the left, with a pale blue sky visible near the upper right corner. The rock on the right is textured, with rough brushstrokes of white, brown, and dark gray on the light-gray surface. The person casts a dark black shadow on the rock, and there are more dark shadows near the bottom right corner. The tall grasses that surround the person are painted in shades of green and yellowish-brown.
