Provenance

(Bernard Black Gallery, New York); sold May 1966 to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon, Upperville, Virginia;[1] gift 1980 to NGA.[2]
[1] According to donor records, in NGA curatorial files.
[2] There are two known casts of this sculpture, one in the NGA and the other in The Walter's Art Gallery, Baltimore. One cast was exhibited in New York in 1889 as no. 37, and was listed as belonging to R. Austin Robertson, ESQ. However, it is undetermined as to whether this is the copy belonging to the NGA or to the Walters.
