Artist, American, 1876 - 1925

The image is a landscape viewed from an elevated perspective, looking out across a valley towards a body of water which creates a natural horizon line in the composition. The horizon is well-placed in the upper third, giving emphasis to the land in the distance, dotted with trees and hills. The artwork appears to be an etching, characterized by detailed and fine lines that build up texture and depth. The color palette is monochromatic, relying on shades of black and grey. Closest to us, the landscape features undulating terrain with sparse plant life, which gradually leads the eye to more densely wooded areas beyond. In the distance, the outline of a hilly landmass can be seen, emerging from the other side of the water.
