Protector Noster Aspice ...

Hieronymus Wierix

Associated Names
Hieronymus Wierix

Artist, Flemish, c. 1553 - 1619

The image shows two full-length figures standing on either side of a cloth displaying the face of Christ. Both figures are positioned slightly forward and are looking downwards and sideways. They have youthful facial features, curly hair, and wings extending behind them. The angels are dressed in long, flowing robes detailed with star-like embellishments. Each angel is holding a corner of the cloth that bears the bearded face of Christ, crowned with thorns. The scene is set in a background where clouds part to reveal a radiant light at the top center. At the bottom of the image, there is an inscription that reads, "Protector noster aspice Deus, et respice in faciem Christi tui," accompanied by the artist's signature, "Hieronymus Wierx fecit et exc."
