Mobius Strip II

1963

M.C. Escher

Artist, Dutch, 1898 - 1972

Eight brick-red ants crawl along a three-dimensional figure eight in this vertical woodblock print. The figure eight is a mobius strip, which can be created when connecting the ends of a strip after having twisted one end halfway around. The mobius fills most of the height of the composition, and seems to be made from a strip of peanut-brown, trellis-like material. The ants crawl along both sides of the mobius strip, which creates an infinite surface because of the way it twists on itself. The shape and ants are set against a cream-colored background. The front edge of the bottom loop is inscribed with “II ’63 MCE” in minuscule lettering. The artist signed the paper under the image near the lower left corner, “MCEscher,” and inscribed “eigendruk” under the lower right.
