The image is a sketch with multiple studies of figures. Two men are depicted in loose, flowing garments, resembling togas or robes. The central figure is turned slightly to the side, holding a book with one hand underneath and the other hand holding it open. He is looking to the left, with basic outlines of facial features. His hair is short and close to his head. Another figure is shown standing in profile to the right, wearing a robe, with detailed facial features, a strong nose, and a bald head with some hair at the back. Additional studies show older men with various facial expressions, hair, and beards. The figures are outlined against a blank background.
