Associated Names
Canaletto

Artist, Venetian, 1697 - 1768

The image shows a bird's-eye view of an architectural scene with a plaque at the center. The horizon is not visible, and various architectural elements and figures lead towards it. The brushwork is intricate with fine lines and detailed etching giving texture to the structures and sky. The color palette is monochromatic with shades of gray emphasizing the etching's shadows. Closest to us are steps leading to a large stone plaque with text, surrounded by stone ruins and foliage. In the distance, architectural elements such as domes and columns are visible, hinting at an ancient or classical setting, with wispy clouds in the sky.
