Provenance

The artist; received 20 November 1979 by (Protetch-McIntosh Gallery, Washington, D.C.);[1] sold 1980 to Chris Middendorf, for Robin Rose, Washington, D.C.;[2] sold 1984 to Carolyn Small Alper [1927-2020], Washington, D.C.; gift (partial and promised) 1991 to NGA; gift completed 2020.
[1] Provenance details were kindly supplied by Jeanne Englert, personal assistant to the artist, in an e-mail of 29 April 2019, in NGA curatorial files. The name of the Protetch-McIntosh Gallery changed over the years, first to the McIntosh/Drysdale Gallery, then to the Nancy Drysdale Gallery.
[2] Middendorf had his own gallery, Middendorf Lane Gallery, in Washington. According to the artist's records (see note 1), Middendorf advanced the money for the purchase to Rose.
