Provenance
Consigned September 1981 by the artist to (Pace Gallery, New York); sold 26 April 1982 to Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Halff, Jr., San Antonio;[1] (Mary Boone Gallery, New York); sold November 1987 to Robert and Jane Meyerhoff, Phoenix, Maryland;[2] gift 1992 to NGA.
[1] The painting was no. 09752 in the Pace Gallery's records. Documentation of the consignment and sale were provided by Pace to Tiffany Bell, editor, Agnes Martin Catalogue Raisonné, who kindly shared the information in her e-mail of 11 June 2013; copy in NGA curatorial files. The provenance for the painting published in the 1996 catalogue of the Meyerhoff exhibition at the NGA (The Robert and Jane Meyerhoff Collection: 1945 to 1995) incorrectly began with Barbara Guggenheim, New York (an art consultant), followed by Robert H. Halff (1908-2004, a Los Angeles collector).
[2] Invoice #2910 dated 26 November 1987, from Mary Boone Gallery to Mr. and Mrs. Meyerhoff; copy in NGA curatorial files.
