Artwork history & notes

Provenance

Felsing Collection, Germany; Gerda Bassenge; Gerhard and Marianne Pinkus, Los Angeles; gift to NGA, 1998.
This provenance information was taken from an interview with Gerhard Pinkus conducted by Judith Brodie at the National Gallery on September 10, 1995 (transcript in NGA archives). It does, however, contradict information on the donor's mat which indicates that the work was owned by a Professor Isaac Grünewald from Stockholm and that Gerhard Pinkus acquired it from Kornfeld & Klipstein at a sale, June 1965, lot 147.
