Käthe Kollwitz

Artist, German, 1867 - 1945

Drawn with black chalk on ash-brown paper and partially filled in with opaque watercolor, a baby and child sleep on a woman lying back on a high pillow as a man sits with his face in his fists in this horizontal drawing. With her head to our left, the woman’s shoulders angle slightly toward us, and she looks vacantly off to the right. Her features are faintly drawn with black chalk, giving her an insubstantial look. Tucked under the woman’s left arm, farther from us, the baby sleeps with mouth open and head tipped back. The woman rests both hands down to touch the head of the sleeping child on her lap. The pillow and clothing are painted with white. In the lower left corner, a bald man with a craggy brow and bumped nose looks to our right in profile. He is drawn entirely with and shaded heavily with black chalk. He rests his chin in both fists, and wears a dark coat pulled high up on his neck. The artist wrote in the lower right corner, “Kathe Kollwitz Arbeitslosigkeit 1909.”
