The image shows two soldiers walking through a rough, barren landscape marked by trenches. The perspective is slightly elevated, revealing the scene with mounds of earth on either side of the trenches, distant landforms, and sparse trees. Loose, expressive brushstrokes using watercolor and ink give the image a sketch-like quality. The color palette is muted with various shades of gray, brown, faded greens, and dark ink for outlines and shadows. The terrain is rough and uneven close to the soldiers, while the landscape flattens out into a cloudy sky in the distance.
