Two Figures on a Country Road

Artist, British, 1778 - 1842

The image shows a rural scene with two figures standing close to us. The horizon is placed higher in the composition, obscured by a cluster of trees and a building with a slanted roof in the middle of the image. The brushstrokes are loose and textural, creating movement and roughness. The color palette is monochromatic, with shades of black and gray on a light background. Beyond the figures and the building, dense foliage of trees occupies much of the space, with the sky subtly suggested in the upper part of the image.
