Provenance
Cast 1996 by Giancarlo Gentilini, Florence;[1] gift 1998 to NGA.
[1] The mask was cast from a terracotta bust of Lorenzo de' Medici, currently (1998) in a private collection in Florence. An entry about the bust is in the following exhibition catalogue, published by Silvana Editoriale, Milan, in 1992: L'Architettura di Lorenzo il Magnifico, exhibition held 1992 at Spedale degli Innocenti, Florence, p. 125. That essay dates the bust to the sixteenth century. A nineteenth century origin has also been proposed.
