Artist, American, 1857 - 1926

The image shows the Parthenon from a low angle, slightly left of center. The horizon is low with steps leading up to the Parthenon. In the distance to the left, another structure can be seen. The painting uses dense brushstrokes in black and white, creating a dramatic sky and texture on the structures. The color palette is grayscale, adding to the historic atmosphere. Closest to the viewer, rough stones lead the eye up to the ruins.
