The image depicts an older man shown from the waist up, seated, and facing slightly to the left. He has a full beard, short hair mostly covered by a cap, and a serious expression. He is wearing a coat with fur trim, a light-colored shirt with a large, frilled collar, and is holding a book in one hand, which rests on the table before him. His other hand is extended slightly forward with the palm up. There is an oval frame around him with inscriptions, and the background is plain with shading. At the bottom, there are columns of text.
