Rug

Philip Guston · 1976 · oil on canvas ·  Accession ID  2005.142.19

The image displays an abstract composition of geometric shapes and lines. A large brown square is positioned diagonally like a diamond, surrounded by smaller black and white squares and rectangles. The shapes create an arrangement that suggests a minimalist cityscape or a modern building. Contrasting colors in the forms emphasize the abstract representation, allowing viewers to make connections to familiar patterns or objects within the composition.

The Age of Iron

Harvey Quaytman · 1986 · acrylic, rust, and collage on canvas ·  Accession ID  2015.19.192

The image shows swirling and curving lines intersecting and overlapping to form intricate network of shapes. It features bold strokes of deep blue, vibrant pink, hints of green and yellow creating a layered, textured appearance. There are suggestions of familiar objects like a seashell or a face. The combination of colors and shapes creates a dynamic dance, where forms emerge and recede into the abstract background.

The image is a sketch of the back of a person's head and shoulders. The drawing focuses on the upper portion of the body, depicting the person from behind. The head is rounded, covered with short textured lines indicating hair, but no facial features are visible due to the angle. There is no visible clothing detail except for the outline of shoulders. The background is plain and unadorned. The artist's signature, "Philip Guston '69," appears in the bottom right corner of the image.

The image displays brushstrokes forming thick, swirling lines across the canvas in shades of gray, black, and pink. The composition is abstract with irregular shapes. The patterns of the brushstrokes suggest connections to objects such as a stormy sky or rugged terrain. The texture created by the brushwork adds depth to the scene, evoking a sense of movement.

This painting displays a background of horizontal rectangles in shades of blue. To the left of center is a tall white shape that resembles a ladder: two vertical posts with horizontal lines between them. A red shape that looks like a thin tube seems to stretch across the ladder, folding over the top rung. At each end of this long shape are what look like the soles of shoes, the top one only partially visible. To the right of center, parallel with the top of the ladder, a semi-circular shape with orange and pink concentric patterns is visible above the largest horizontal blue section. The impression given is a ladder leaning against a blue wall, with a figure or shape partially visible behind the wall. The blue sections have faint lines of pink and red in them, and the brushstrokes in the painting are visible.
