Hanns Lautensack · 1554 · etching on laid paper ·  Accession ID  2012.92.560

Printed with bold, black, angular lines and slashes on white paper, five stylized women stand in a loose row across the width of this vertical woodcut. All five wear long, dark coats or dresses. The leftmost woman wears a turban-like hat, and the others have hats topped with long plumes. Their bodies are narrow and taper to their feet, and all the women appear to stand with hands in pockets except the frontmost, who braces one hand on her hip. Their features are roughly carved with almond shapes or slits for eyes, thickly outlined lips, heavy eyebrows, and some horizontal shading on the cheeks. The all face our left in profile except the leftmost woman, who faces us. Some abstracted forms, including a wheel, fill the right quarter of the composition. The rest of the background is white except for some carving marks that printed black.

Five Women on the Street

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner · 1914 · woodcut on heavy wove paper ·  Accession ID  1985.46.1

This is a print of a muscular, nude figure falling from the sky. Their back is to us, and their body is slightly bent, so we mainly see their upper back, shoulders, and arms, as well as some of their thighs and legs. The person has a powerful, muscular back and limbs. The person’s body is oriented diagonally across the composition, with one of their arms extended upward and the other flung down. In the distance, at the top of the print, other shapes fall through the sky, including several horses, a chariot, and a loose wheel. The scene is enclosed within a circular border with Latin inscriptions. Below, the background reveals a faintly drawn landscape with a wide river, billowing smoke coming from small buildings, and hints of distant mountains.

This is an illustration showing a man falling through clouds and flames with a look of horror on his face. The drawing depicts a muscular figure in a state of distress, descending through voluminous clouds. The figure's contorted body and facial expression suggest turmoil. Below, there are plumes of fire and smoke adding a sense of impending doom or descent into an infernal region. The detailed line work and shading capture the chaotic motion and intense emotion of the scene, enclosed within a circular border where Latin text is inscribed.
